[Movie Review] Penguins of Madagascar

From DreamWorks Animation, creators of the Shrek, Madagascar, How to Train Your Gragon, and Kung Fu Panda sagas, comes the story of the coolest characters in the Madagascar universe (The penguins). Fresh off of having their own solo television show separate from the films they made their debut in, Skipper and crew finally get the solo film they deserved.

The penguins are recruited by a secret organization sworn to protect animals called The North Wind, who are led by a mysterious wolf called Agent Classified (Benedict Cumberbatch). Together they both a face a common enemy, Dr. Octavius Brine aka Dave (John Malkovich), an evil octopus bent on revenge against the penguins. When one of their own is taken by Dave and his minions, the penguins spring into action to rescue their friend and thwart Dave’s diabolical plans.

With the voice talents of Tom McGrath, Chris Miller, Christopher Knights, and Conrad Vernon as the titular penguins, along with Benedict Cumberbatch, John Malkovich, Peter Stormare, Ken Jeong, and Annet Mahendru, DreamWorks seeks to give the penguins a stand alone film worthy of their awesomeness.
Unfortunately it falls a bit flat and while the film is a fun adventure for the kids, as it should be, the plot and the humor are lacking in what they truly need to put this film over the top. Even skipper couldn’t salvage this mission. I give this film 2 1/2 stars.
